This is certainly one of the true symbols of Lisbon: erected in XVI century, the tower was designed by the architect Francisco Arruda and originally it stoods in the midle of the river and served as both a lighthouse and a prison! Today is a very elegant structure open to visitors who can admire its characteristically Manueline decoration of its main body, adorned by intricate Manueline filigree,, featuring cables and knots mouldings and lovely balconies with paired windows and a beautiful Renaissance gallery.
A spiral staircase leads the visitors to the upper level, a balcony with a superb view over the estuary, the nearby Monument to the Discoverers and to the Lisbon`s famous bridge "25th April".

Magnificent image of the tower built between 1514 and 1520, and of course river Tagus. B&W tones have worked very well here.
