This is one of those comprising streets of Bairro Alto, where you can find the most popular restaurants and bars: here we can still enjoy the traditional plaintive songs, FADOS, amidst the heavy atmosphere of small, smoke-filled taverns where, with a bit of luck, one will witness the improvised participation of the audience in this art form, whose roots lie in the Middle Ages and which strives to reflect an atmosphere of nostalgic yerning, SAUDADE, the eternal passions of human existences!

The perspective works very well here.
You can feel almost how narrow the street is.

Yves, le "FADO" est pour les Portugais ce que "Les Blues" sont pour les Noirs, ce que "Le Tango" est pour les Argentins ou ce que "Le Flamenco" est pour les Espagnols... Ce sont des genres musicaux qui ne se jouent pas, ils se vivent!!! SAUDADE is there. Thank you, my friend.

J`ai eu la chance il y a quelques annees, peu de temps avant sa mort, d`assister a un concert , d`Amalia Rodriguez. Elle etait venue chez des amis a elle, pres de Limoges et avait acceptй de chanter dans le cadre d`un festival local. C`йtait presque intime et bouleversant. Nous en avons garde un souvenir magnifique.

i have never been to a tavern or enjoyed any traditional songs while dining though have visited million times various restaurants.
