Superb interpretation.
great!
perspective tells me this could be the beginning - or end (depending on one`s standpoint) - of a never-ending row of stone saints - or martyrs
the sadness on their faces makes me go for the latter - the suffering and persecuted ones - rather than the former - they who have reached the realm of bliss - why because those subjected to pain are more likely to start things than those whose spirit is weakened by joy
of course we could just say this is jesus and this is mary
one watching over the world the other praying that pain and injustice come to an end soon
but two people are too few to significantly change something
hundreds of millions of jesuses and at least as many maries could really matter - if only as an army with banners and state-of-the-art machine guns
