In the early years of automobilism there was no way to tell the engine temperature unless the driver saw steam coming from the radiator cap. There was a need to know the temperature of the engine cooling system so motometers were born. The new improvement also offered manufacturers a new artifact on which to display some distinctive emblematic form or stylized logo. Soon there were sculpted pieces into which the motometer attached. Mascots and hood ornaments saw a period of high popularity in the 1930s to early 1950s, with some still in use today. However, the need for an exterior heat gauge was eliminated with the introduction of water temperature gauges mounted on the dashboard. Exterior radiator caps also began to disappear as manufacturers opted for radiators accessed beneath the hood. The mascot then became purely ornamental, and with no need for functionality, ornaments became far more creative. By 1930 the mascot was taking several prevalent forms. The goddess was an extremely popular motif. Other mythological figures as griffin, gryphon, pegasus also had their moment. Animal forms were very popular: lions, quails in flight, storks, and eagles. Forms based on inanimate objects included a crescent moon, a sail, a diving helmet, and a crown. The winged wheel was a popular motif.

The picture shows a mascot of a Packard car. It was taken at the Ft. Lauderdale Antique Car Museum that contains 22 Packard automobiles from 1900 to the 1940's, along with a gallery dedicated to the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt plus several special collections of automobile memorabilia.

Лишь одна важная ошибка не

мотометры

а Барометр (от греч. baros - тяжесть, вес и metreo - измеряю)

Ошибка у вас, не знаю важная ли. Мотометр - это не борометр. См., например, здесь:

Для контроля за правильностью работы системы охлаждения, на радиаторе устанавливают специальный термометр. Одним из наиболее распространенных приборов этого типа является мотометр Бой-са: на круглой шкале сделан ряд прорезов , каждый из к-рых соответствует определенному состоянию радиатора; если столбик спиртового термометра выйдет в верхнюю часть, то это указывает, что вода в радиаторе кипит, нужно остановить мотор; следующие черточки показывают нормальные t°, соответствующие термосифонной или принудительной, с насосом, системам охлаждения.

Может знаете зачем именно фигурки, они приседали от давления или начинали светиться загадочным светом.
По наивности думал для красоты их лепил автопром .

Мотометр или Мото - метр - авто измерители ---- также как мото-крос
фирма Бой-са .

Спасибо, Сабирджан, за увлекательный рассказ и прекрасное фото. Обожаю автомобильную старину, где формы кузова подчеркивали стремительность автомобиля и были функциональны: крылья, подножки, фары. Дизай "шевроле-импала" чего стоит! А мерседесы времён Штирлица? А Хорьх? smile

Отличный снимок. Интересные вещи рассказали, Сабирджан. Я этой темой интересуюсь, но в такие глубины не вникал. Порылся у себя в архиве - и, точно, нашёл. Подтверждаю, что Вы всё правильно изложили. В нижней части прибора видна надпись "Moto-meter". Не знаю, будет ли видно на вэбовской копии.
