Priory palace or a castle - the original palace in Gatchina. Often called the Priory , from Fr . prieuré - « a small monastery monastic estates ." Built in 1799 by architect N.A. Lvov . The name " Priory Palace " for Priory stuck in the XX century.
Create Priory connected with the history of Europe in the late XVIII century. As a result of the French Revolution, the Order of Malta has lost a significant part of their holdings . Order appealed for help to just come to the throne Paul I. In January 1797 the Emperor signed the Convention , according to which Russia was created " Grand Priory of " Order of Malta. To organize the administration Priory of the Order of the property was transferred to the former Vorontsov Palace in St. Petersburg. Soon after, Paul I decided to build a summer residence for the prior of the Order of Malta Prince of Conde . Location was chosen Gatchina Palace - residence of Paul I.
Priory was received by Emperor August 22, 1799 , and on August 23 granted the Order of Malta . By this time, the Emperor Paul I was already de facto Grand Master - head of the order , thus becoming the full owner of the Priory . October 12, 1799 in the Palace of the Knights of Malta to its new Grand Master were transferred to the Hospital three ancient relics - a piece of the tree of the Cross , Filermskaya icon of the Mother of God and the hand of St.. John the Baptist ( in memory of this event in 1800, was established holiday - Transferring from Malta to Gatchina of the Cross) .
