Sorry, I do not know, what is is DOF...&(

Andre Andre #11 Fri 23 Apr 2004 02:12

Ok, I`m going to try to explain as briefly as I can Larissa.
DOF is the abreviation for "Depth of field", what is this Depth thing?
The "depth of field" is the total region of adequate focus, in order to achieve good sharpness in areas close to the camera as in the more distant ones, a small aperture must be selected.
There are two other important factors that affect DOF, the lens focal lenght (shorter the focal lenght, bigger the DOF) and the camera to subject distance (move away from the subject to increase DOF).
There are 3 very important factors affecting depth of field, which are:

1- The DOF doubles if the f/stop number is doubled (from f/8 to f/16 for example).
2- If you double the camera to subject distance, the depth of field increase by 4 times, triplicate the distance and the DOF increase by 9 times ( DOF is proportional to the square of the distance).
3- If you reduce the focal lenght by half, the DOF increase by 4 times (DOF is inversely proportional to the square of the focal lenght).

I hope I could help somehow with this technical manbo-jambo:))

Happy shooting

Andre
