This photo was taken from a belvedere called “Vista do Rei - King’s view” in S. Miguel island.
According to the legend, the King summoned the Court and the Ambassador of Prince Regent who demands his daughter as a guarantee for the peace treaty, but she refused because she was in love with a shepherd, so her father ordered she should be dressed in a nun’s habit and be locked in the highest tower of the castle. The colours of the lagoon, one blue and the other green, represents the tears of the princess and the shepherd, since these were the colours of their eyes!!!
The landscape of S. Miguel, aside being extremely beautiful, also demands fearfull respect due to its mountains. It was here, at Pico da Vara, (Vara’s mountain) that happen one of the biggest dramas in the life of the French singer, Edith Piaf: the boxing champion Marcel Cerdan, who was coming to meet her in New York, was one of the passengers that died in the plane crash in this mountain. S. Miguel is the biggest Portuguese island and has about 130.000 inhabitants.

Encore une tres belle photo Luquieso. C`est un magnifique paysage avec de superbes couleurs. Je savais que Cerdan etait mort pres des Aзores, mais j`ignorais que c`etait sur l`ile de San Miguel. Quelle merveilleuse photo, mon ami!
