Tiles above doorways...
This little poignant panel of tiles depict the Virgin Mary and Patron Saints such as Saint Anthony and Saint Marcal and we could find lots of them, years ago, in many houses of Alfama. Perhaps this seems to you an insignificant feature, but it is not indeed, it`s our patrimony we are loosing...
TILES=AZULEJOS, are the quintessence of Portugal, have become over the centuries a major decorative feature around the country and it seems this was an inheritance of the Moors! The term “azulejo” comes from “azul”, Arabic “lapis lazuli” a semiprecious blue stone of which origin suppose to be Mesopotamia.
Today a great effort is being made in order to maintain its soul and there’s a factory named “Sao Simao Arte” that only produces “azulejos” in the old style.
This is a subject that I would like to share with you in the near future.

Very nice picture Luquesio and interesting story. And yes I agree, it’s sad if one is losing ones patrimony. So many people just don’t care today.
With many thanks and best regards.
