Eugenio de Andrade is a pseudonym of Jose Fontinhas: he was born in Povoa de Atalaia (Fundao) in 1923 and in 1950 he went to Oporto where there’s a foundation with his name. In 2001 he won Camoes award.

“Green God”

He bore in him the grace
of fountains as the night falls
the body was like a river
serenely challenging
the banks as it flows onward.

He walked like one who passes
without time to stop.
Grass sprouted in his footprints,
and trunks grew from his arms
when he raised then in the air.
