The number - 3612 persons, including in Krasnoselkup district Yamalo-Nenets autonomous county 1600 persons.
Settling - Krasnoyarsk edge (the north Turuhansk district), Tomsk region, Yamalo-Nenets autonomous county (Krasnoselkup district), Hanty-Mansiysk autonomous county (the orient).
In russian language as general ethnonym they use the term an ostyaki- self-meal, a name, given by him russian.
Selkup language pertains to self-meal group ural languages. Selkups formed in the course of long interaction and mergings of the aboriginal population of the average current river Ob with penetrated here at the beginning initially our eras from region Sayan samodiy tribes. In 17 century part selkups was resettled northward, on river Taz, but later - and on river Turuhan.
The mass christening were subjected to in 18 century selkups, but continued to save the ancient religious presentations and rites.
The main traditional occupations selkups - a hunt, river fishing, taiga providences (the collection of the berries, cedar nut), beside north groups - and reindeer breeding. At present reindeer breeding is developed weakly, only some families keeps the herd of the deers in 20-30 goals for the personal use.
The tragedy to present situation is concluded in that that selkups as ethnos are found under threat of the full disappearance: they threaten the assimilation with the other folk, many descendants selkups choose for itself nationality russians, hanty, nenetss, and drunkenness.
