terve Teemu, very nice noctural image, I assume it is a reburbished factory or amill converted to something else (or still in its original use?) - beautiful light and water reflections.

Privet Eugene! Through Tampere runs Tammer rapids. There used to be a lot of industry built around the rapids and there still is some, but most of the buildings are now in other use. There are theaters, museums, clubs, restaurants and offices.

Terve Teemu! Now I know why it is Tammerfors, because of Tammer stream or rapids. Yes, they used to build industrial buildings on the banks of rivers and streams in the past, industy needed a ready source of water to pollute but in the 19 century mills also required streams as a source of ready power. That building does not look too old, I would guess it could have been built from 1930s until late 1950s, but the setting is of course beautiful. Some of those old factory buildings (the older better) make great residential conversions. I saw a few apartment conversions in France and the UK with exposed brick walls, 6 meter high ceilings and massive wooden beams. In Russia most of those old factories and still… factories but times are changing because 19 and early 20 century brick factories and mills are close to the city center, real estate values go up every year and people want to live in historic properties, so I expect within 10 to 20 years there’ll be massive conversion of old riverside utilitarian properties – warehouses, mills, factories to offices, restaurants, shopping centers and apartment complexes and the process is already underway although it is not apparent just because there is many old waterfront industrial areas (like there is Circular Channel, Obvodny Kanal in St. Petersburg which has 19 century factories on both sides along its 8 km stretch in the city and some of it quite picturesque). Anyway, the photo is beautiful and made me want to visit Tampere for a day or two.
