The Fortress with its 1430 m.s of walled perimeter is, after the Alhambra, the more extensive Muslim construction of Spain and our more representative monument. Their 1000 years of history are united to the city, accompanying their moments by splendor and decay, like a witness privileged from that promontory that is shown like watchtower to the bay of Almeria. Its origin goes back to the 955, considered also original year of the city of Almeria. In this date the Abd caliph al-Rahmбn III grants the category from medina to our city, ordering to construct the strength of the Fortress, the greater mosque and to wall the urban enclosure. Although the Fortress served in the beginning as host as the governors and Christian Muslim kings and soon as he calls to account of alcбides, always were a military strength. This function, together with the effects of earthquakes, like the one of 1522, and to the periods of abandonment and expolio, caused deteriorations and later restorations that have modified their original appearance. It excels by his great amplitude (450 meters in length and 43,000 m2 of surface), easy defense and complexity (three enclosures of diverse times). This strength has lived moments on splendor, specially in century XI with the reigns of Jayrбn, Zuhayr and Almotacнn, but also of crisis with the despoblamiento of our city during the Modern Age, and in general of abandonment. Happily the declaration of the Monumental Joint Fortress as has made possible its rehabilitation and an increase of the visits.
