Although Carmo Archaeological Museum Collections are very rich and comprising, I will restrain my work to the Sculpture from the Modern Period, namely to the monumental Manueline sculpture that ranges from the end of the 15th century to the first decades of the 16th, and some Renaissance and Mannerist architectural pieces from the end of 16th century!
The Manueline period provides two windows and a tomb: this is one of the windows, double bay, defined by a mullion, framed by two pillars and decorated with vegetal features, with the inclusion of ropes binding the knotty trunks to the corona, a traditionally Manueline decoration. This window is part of a wall decoration above the entrance to the main chapel, (See previous photo) it’s from the first half of 16th century, limestone, and it was originally part of the “Hieronymite Convent, (Mosteiro dos Jerуnimos) from where it was brought because it was not used in the 19th century reconstruction.
What is really unusual for this type of piece is the presence of a frieze on the parapet, decorated with Renaissance motifs, as far as, the grotesque figures (faces) at the bases of the pillars, which means that there’s also a mixture of artistic influences. I would like to draw your attention for the relief work and to the erudite nature of several motifs.
Arte Manuelina or Estilo Manuelino: I think we can say, if I may be so bold, that it’s late Gothic with special decorative motifs (ropes, anchors, corals… fauna and flora of the oceans) and refers directly with King D. Manuel and the Portuguese Discoveries.
Thank you again for your support and kind comments.
