Nicola

The 20th of December, 2005, marked the 200th anniversary of the death of the Portuguese greatest poet of 18th century, Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage
(1765-1805) and this photograph is my tribute to the man who was arrested
in 1797 and died in poverty!
Nicola is a very well known restaurant in Lisbon, founded in 1929 in the same
place where, in 18th century, a man from Genova whose name was Nicola,opened
a tavern where the poet Bocage used to go everyday!
It has an Arte Nova facade and inside it’s Art Deco geometric style!

This was a very interesting day for me too, because the Portuguese government decided to pay tribute to the poet on the jail he spent part of his life, so there was a kind of an informal chat, where some specialists talk about the life of this man and read some of the most famous ppoems of him (namely Liberty...) and then we could also listen some music of his time (Joseph Haydn-trio en Sol Maior, Andante, Poco Adagio and Finale) by a Trio of three students from the Nacional Conservatory (Piano, celo and violin) and guess who?...the violinist was my youngest daughter Madalena! Tha's why I was invited, I guess...
