Harris Hawks like to perch up high so that they can use their keen eye sight to its fullest advantage. Saguaros do nicely (ouch, I wouldn't perch on one, but it works for them.) as do power utitlity poles. They are very swift hunters who dive from great heights when they spot their prey.
Go here to see another photo of the sad and dangerous element of when Raptor meets the world of man. This is one of this creatures most dangerous run-ins

I have an OBGYN friend that used to have a redtail. He even bought a jeep to take his bird on outings. Magnificent creatures. Watching the power and hunger in them as they feast, scared me enough to know I didn't want to wear the glove. You really have to respect them to keep them. I know my friend always respected the fact that they were still wild even in captivity.
I wish I had taken up this camera thing back in his birding days.

Never used a glove with my birds . Mutual trust is built up as well as respect ! Maybe I will try it out again once I am retired and can pay more attention to the bird. When I was A teenager my birds slept in my bedroom. Made my Mom really mad. But when our Pastor came to visit and failed to take his hat off in the house , Sheba my red tailed did it for him.
My Mom did not like that trick so Sheba had to sleep outside in her cage after that.
Still fly a Red tail now and again that belongs to a friend. Also have flown a Golden Eagle !
Best regards , Barry улыбаюсь )))

Barry, that's a great story. I had no idea they could be that well trained. The redtail that my friend had was captive for only a short time and released back into the wild. He and his friends did not let them imprint too much on the humans, just the glove that held a reward. Maybe that was why those birds were all business when it came to the hunt or enjoying a nice tasty mouse. I have some photos of a ferrugian hawk that was trained to the glove taken at the Desert museum. I might post some of those photos. I don't know if those are native to our area. Big beautiful raptors they are though. The Desert Museum has a family (4 total) of the Harris Hawks. They fly them together. Quite a sight. Here inthe neighborhood Ann and the dogs were buzzed today by the family of three on the nightly walk. I missed it as I was stuck at work. Must be nice to look at retirement around the corner.

my Redtail was saved by me from a Racoon. He had ripped up her craw and she was almost dead. At the time I worked for a vet and I took her there. That's where the bond bagan to form. Other birds that I had saw how we interacted and began to respect and trust me more. Sheba the Redtail used to walk down the street with me on my sholder with no restraint. I just sem to have a way with with all raptors. I go out to this lake about 4 miles from where we live and call up the birds . I am answered every time and have but a few minutes wait .
We may not retire to Mexico and are going to look for a house in Flagstaff !
