notes:
During Ottoman empire and its presence in Balkan existed strange custom - "tax paid in blood" ... mining that Turkish soldiers had a right to take away young Serbian boys from home and train them to become top sildiers and to fight against their own people one day. They had to give away the children... otherwise entire family would be dead. Some mothers even mutilated their children... cutting the hands off because soldiers had no interest in invalid children.
Sokullu Sehit Mehmet Pasa ( 1505-1579 ) was "tax paid in blood" and he become great Turkish soldier and navy minister, but has never forgotten place of his origin. Mehmet Pasa had strong influence on Turkish government and its politic, he even married Sultan`s daughter, ... so he managed to create some benefits for Serbia.
He fight many wars and conquest Arabia. Naturally had a lot of enemies and died in attentat, some dervish killed him.
During his life he built stone bridge across river Drina (between Serbia and Bosnia) and mosque in Istanbul, ... two beautiful things one for his own people and one for Turkish people... because he played on both sides.
This is the entrance of his mosque.
