The Blue mosque was founded by Sultan Ahmet I and he wanted to surpass Justinian and his Aya Sophia which was built 1000 years earlier.So he told his architect Mehmet Aga to build the mosque with golden minaret,...but he heard him wrong because in turkish language words "golden" and "six" sound almost the same. That is how the only mosque in the world with six minarets was constructed. Sultan was angry, but when he saw how beautiful it is he decided not to kill the architect after all.
Construction lasted between 1609-1616. Unfortunately Sultan died one year after the construction, when he was only 27 years old.
