The alpha has the greatest amount of social freedom among all the pack members, but he is not a "leader" in the human sense of the term. The alpha does not give the other wolves orders; rather, he simply has the most freedom in choosing where to go, what to do, and when to do it. The rest of the pack usually follows. (Note: normally in every pack there are two alpha' s - a male and a female - in the picture shown it' s the male alpha only).
