Tomie Ohtake Institute - Sao Paulo - Brazil

Inaugurated in 2001, the Tomie Ohtake Cultural Institute is one of the main destinations for art-lovers. Its namesake is one of Brazil’s greatest living artists, who arrived in Brazil in 1936 as a Japanese tourist and decided to stay.
The museum's success is no accident. With its wavy blue and maroon walls and giant looming tower, cost almost 10m reais. Mrs Ohtake's two sons have had a big hand in its creation: one, Ruy, designed the building, and the other, Ricardo, is the institute’s director. Besides exhibiting Mrs Ohtake’s abstract paintings and engravings, the gallery also has space for temporary shows by other artists. The centre's 720-seat theatre opened this year.
