St.-Petersburg, Alexander's column, bronze bas-relief.
This is a monument to Alexander the First who won a victory over the french army led by Napoleon. The Column was to surpass in its beauty the Vendome Column (demolished in 1871) which was erected in Paris in honor of the victory by Napoleon.

The total height of the Column is 47.5 meters. On the top of it there is a statue of an angel trampling a snake with a cross. The face of the angel resembles the features of Alexander the First. The pedestal is decorated with a bas-relief which allegorically represents some episodes of the war with Napoleon.

A colossal granite block weighing 704 tones was shipped from the northern shore of the Finish Gulf to St-Petersburg. About 2.5 thousand people took part in mounting the column which lasted for about two hours.
