This is the National Palace, the most characteristic edifice of Sintra: enhanced by two twin giant conical chimneys and dated from 14th century, the palace is a combination of Moorish, Gothic and Manueline styles.
Inside this palace there is the most notable and extensive collection of Mudejar Azulejos (color tiles) of the world and many special rooms sumptuously decorated, namely the Coat of Arms Room, whose wooden vault bears the coats of arms of several families belonging to the Portuguese aristocracy, the Room of the Swans, with a magnificent ceiling too, divided with octagonal panels decorated with swans, the Magpies Room, whose name derives from the birds portrayed on the ceiling, each one holding a rose in its peak and, according to tradition, the birds represent the gossiping of the women of the Court after the Queen had discovered her husband, John II , kissing one of her ladies-in waiting.
