notes:
Savkina Gorka (Savkina Hill) was one of the links in a system of fortifications along the frontiers of Russia. Also part of this sys-tem and a strongpoint for defense from foreign invaders was nearby Voronich, which we shall come to later. Both these places were the scene of hitter fighting be-tween Russian soldiers and invaders. It may well be that here once stood the "Ar-changel Mikhail (Mikhailovskoye) Mon-astery of Gorodishche". from which Mi-khailovskoye took its name. At the beginning of this century a very old wooden chapel still stood half in ruins on Savkina Hill and to this day there remains an old granite gravestone with a recess for mounting a cross. It is more than 400 years old, as is shown by the half-erased inscrip-tion: Sava the priest raised this cross in the year of 7021. Savkina Hill is named after the priest. According to the modern calendar the year 7021 is 1513. The cross was probably placed on the common grave of Russian soldiers who defended the fortress. Also named after the priest was the village of Savkino, which existed close to the hill right up to the Second World War: it was burned to the ground by the fascists in 1944. On the site now is a settlement housing the staff of the museum park. Pushkin loved to visit Savkina Hill.
