The history of this building begins with King Carol The First (April 1866 - October 10, 1914) who wished to raise a building to host a library for students in Bucharest. The foundation stone was laid in 1891.
The Interwar period signified the apogee of the foundation. In the auditorium, the intelectuals of the time were taking the word and attending lectures.
American bombing in 1944 had affected the building, but the hard moment was surpassed.
The black moment in the history of the building was December 1989 when, under the pretext of fighting terrorists, the tanks had fired from the Revolution Square in the old palace, significantly affecting it and destroying many valuable manuscripts and books.
It's a shame!
