The city's name comes from the Estonian word kallas (Beach). In Russian village used to be called "Red Mountain", "Red Mountain" or "Red Posad," which is associated with the red sandstone typical of the area.
Mountains of course it is difficult to name, height of shore cliff of 8 meters, but still, this is not the alluvial sand dunes like we have in the north east
The city is the most the extended exposure of Devonian sandstone Estonia. Its dimensions are: length 930 m, the maximum height of 8 meters (measured on 2001). There is also a series of caves and soil fractures.
