On the site of the modern Ainaži in ancient times was located the ancient Liv fishing village. His remote and secluded location gave him the Livinian name Ainagi (liv .: Lonely). For the first time in official documents Ainaži is mentioned in 1564 as the property of the crown. The name Gainash was used. Later, the town was part of the Sweciems manor. In 1800, the village Gainash passed into the possession of the family of barons Meyendorf. By that time, there were the estates “Dreimači”, “Pittaki”, “Pelmes” and “Sapati” in the village. On October 20, 1854, Baron Alexander Meiendorf sold the estate for 23,000 rubles to Maximillian von Alderskron, who, in turn, transferred it to the rent to the native of Bavaria, Alexander Wolf. The rent contract, concluded on September 6, 1856, obliged Wolf to improve the estate’s profitability. During his reign the estates Indes, Baloži, Ramaņi, Menģeļi, Untes, Puriņi and Kaktiņi were built, as well as a small wooden manor-house. Wolf also built a tavern and glass factory off the road to Pernov, as well as a house for his family, who called it “Baltā muižiņa”. In 1876, the village Gainash was sold for 60050 rubles to Count Augustus Mellin
In the second half of the XIX century, shipbuilding and trade began to actively develop in the Gaynash region. In 1864, under the project of Krisjanis Valdemara, captain Christian Dals founded the first naval school in Latvia in Gainas. Education was free and took place in Latvian, Estonian, and later in Russian. Since the founding of the maritime school, Gaynash felt economic growth. In 1880 - 1890s, 20-30 captains graduated from school annually.
In the years 1900-1905, a commercial port was built in Gaynash. Through it exported grain, flax and other goods. In 1912, the Volmarsky access road was opened (Gainash-Wolmar-Smilten). The village’s budget was also supplemented with taxes from ships and railway cargo.
Naval school existed before the First World War. From June 1915 to April 1916, the headquarters of the 431st Tikhvin Infantry Regiment defended the coast of the Gulf of Riga was located in Gainas.
In 1920, Ainaži village became a separate municipal unit, and in 1926 Ainaži received city status. The building of the restored port and the elementary school were located in the building of the naval school.
Despite the fact that in the 1920s – 1930s, tremendous work was done to restore the port in Ainaži (the pier was renewed, the port’s waters were freed from sunken ships and deepened, a lighthouse was built, etc.). . The ships could not moor to the shore, so the transportation of goods was carried out using barges.
Ainaži suffered greatly during World War II. The naval school was burned again, the port and grain warehouses were destroyed. After the war, an attempt was made to restore the port infrastructure, but the construction of the Pärnu port stopped this work. Ainaži lost its economic importance and turned into a resort town.
