Digital vs. SLR

Hello everyone,

I am thinking about buying a new (or used) camera. I have seen some really beautiful shots on this forum which were taken with both digital and normal cameras. I have read though that digital images, when enlarged and printed are not as sharp. Is this still the case even with the newer top of the line models? And which is preferable for use on the web, a good SLR with a cheap scanner, or a good digital camera? Thanks for any advice.

Craig

The sharpness from a digital camera depends on a few things Craig, how many megapixels does the camera have and how steady are your hands.
I have seen pics printed on 8x10 of a drag race car at about 95 mph that you would swear was not moving it was so clear.
This was a professional digi/slr but I have seen good quality from digis that were not as exspensive. you need at least a 3.0 megapixel but a 4.0 or higher would be better to print anything larger than a 5x7. A good printer helps too, I have one that is only used for what it was designed for photo`s only and the quality is very nice.
My camera (olympus 3020 digi) is a 3.3 megapixel and an 8x10 comes out great as long as I took a good shot.
Digis are not magic, you still have to employ the right steps to get a good quality photo.
Digis come in point and shoot плачу yuck and manual or like mine with both I use the manual settings always that way if I screw up I can learn from what I did wrong.
I hope this helps even just a little bit, mandyg5364

There are also other things to consider. Do you want it only for viewing pictures on a computer - if so then digital is ideal.
If however you want prints then it is going to cost you considerably more for a good quality digital camera and as Amanda says you also need a good quality printer. If you take a lot of photos it is also time consuming and more expensive to use digital.
With traditional you get the benefit of high quality at lower cost and you can still scan them in to a computer.
I have both but far prefer the traditional SLR - in fact I`ve just bought a new one.

Thanks Chris and Amanda. Maybe I`ll buy one of each; That seems like the best aproach since I take photos for both printing and the web. The digital cameras and printers keep getting better and cheaper though, so I may wait a while before I get one or may just pick up a used one.
