I want to begin discussion concerning estimations on a photoforum. At me and not only at me creates impression that except for 5 and other 5-estimations on a forum do not exist. People are afraid to put below. It would be desirable to ask - why we are afraid be fair? The given message costs(stands) as in a forum.

Lilia - I started this discussion a long time ago and no one cared - what happens is that - after a while the process gets repetitive. I have felt less and less motivated to participate on any level as you might have noticed - the idea of having any rating at all as we do and to have images be darn near best picture of the moment is also absurd. It`s good for the ego, yet in my mind destroys creativity. Those who get most ratings are those (usually) who provide the most ratings - so there is no real objective measure of what we are doing. Just as harsh criticism can frighten us from creativity, constant compliments gives us a false sense of accomplishment.
On every site that employs ratings, this happens. it`s more a social group than a critiquing group. Does anyone really want it all to change - I don`t think so. I belong to a small forum that has just begun and the critiques are more personal - we know each other more - but even there - it is difficult to be objective all the time. The best part is - there is not numerical grade.
On the other hand, my guess is, if Nick removed the ratings and all the "best of" categories, the activity would fall. I think human beings like games of skill and competition. Fighting that nature in a large group of strangers would be difficult. I am glad you brought this up - let me know what you think. Greg
