Mount Rushmore Sculptor: John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum (1867-1941) . He had originally planned to sculpt their torsos as well as their busts.
With a crew of 400, Borglum worked for 14 years (1927-1941) on the "Shrine of Democracy"-- blasting, drilling, and carving the 60-foot faces (from forehead to chin) into the top of the 6,000-foot mountain and was completed by his son, Lincoln Borglum, the last year ,1941.

John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum was born on March 25, 1867, near Bear Lake, Idaho.
Gutzon Borglum studied art in San Francisco and Paris and kept a studio in London.
he was inspired by the great Auguste Rodin. He supposedly had a swollen head (ego) to rival
those carved on this mountain. He was a bit of a excentric hyperactive socialite as well.

Just 10 miles down the road from this they are making the largest statue of this kind carved
into another mountain. This sculpture be of the native american hero, Crazy Horse. They have his face and part of the arm and horse head carved into the mountain. Why?
Because in America bigger is better. Ture story, straight from the mouth of an American!

By the way, Gutzon is resting in a crypt at Moumt Rushmore, South Dakota.

This photo was taken with my older more primitive camera.
