On the 1st November of 1755, precisely 250 years ago, Lisbon suffered a brutal earthquake and immediately afterwards, a tidal wave which left about 30.000 dead people and destroyed a large part of Lisbon’s architectural heritage!!!
This photograph shows the ruins of the church of Convento do Carmo, dating from 14th century, gothic style, still standing today like a permanent reminder to the Lisbon’s inhabitants of the sheer violence of this catastrophe!
In order to evoke this tragedy, Lisbon’s Town Hall prepared some events that will take place in Lisbon, beginning on the 1st of November, such as, several exhibitions with photographs of Lisbon before the disaster, evocative concerts and thematic international conferences and debates! Aside Lisbon’s initiative, also in Germany at Hamburg’s University, as far as in Switzerland, at Voltair’s Museum in Geneva, similar events are already taking place, such as, the exhibition “Temblez Terrians” where you can see the famous illustrations “Le Bas”, about Lisbon’s Opera House for instance, destroyed by the earthquake!
The great French philosopher, Franзois-Marie Arouet de Voltaire lived in Geneva between 1755/1760 in a palace named “Dйlices”, today the Voltaire’s Museum, where he wrote his poem about Lisbon’s catastrophe and the romance “Candide” where he attacks the optimistic thesis of the two philosophers Leibniz and Pope about “The best of the possible worlds”, making Candide’s character traveling around the world and arriving Lisbon on the 1st of November 1755, the best way he found to criticize mankind unacceptable living conditions…or the confrontation between the Good and the Evil, but
the truth is that ”Man proposes, God disposes”.
