Carmo Convent and its Church are not just valuable because of its architecture or privileged location, but also and mainly because of its symbolism. In fact this is one of the rare buildings that survived to the earthquake! The interior of the ruins of the church was transformed into a museological space, the Archaeological Museum of Carmo, which concept was developed by Possidonio da Silva, the prime mentor and president of the Royal Association of Portuguese Architects and Archaeologists.
Carmo Archaeological Museum was inaugurated 150 years ago and we still can feel the spirit that moved its mentors, curators and perpetuators, it really has a very special atmosphere which confers on the museum a singular character!!!
The uncovered part of the museum, (three naves, spans, crossing and transept), has a permanent exhibition of chosen stone pieces, diverse funerary, epigraphic, statuary and heraldic representations. Fragile artifacts and the most valuable ones remain inside under the covered areas of the ruined church, and the collections are very eclectic in terms of chronology, geography, typology and historic-cultural provenance, as well as, their possible symbolic significance. The artifacts speak for themselves and the exhibition can show the visitors, from the most remote periods up to modernity! As I said, Carmo Archaeological Museum’s Collections (Mac Collections) includes artifacts from the Paleolithic and Neolithic up to the 20th century, which demanded a periodical adaptation of the space in the ruins of Carmo church, and it was during 1940s when these works took the definitive and formal aspect that visitors can find today: the masonry walls were filled with arches linking the former main and collateral chapels to the transept, and integrating all the walls through a series of architectural and sculptural features coming from the Mac collection.
The museum is certainly worth a visit.
