Flagelation.

Belongs to the collection of the Museum of Sacred Art of Olinda, Brazil. According to the records, this painting was done by an anonymous slave indian. Being that a noteworthy fact by itself, other things make this work of special interest, like the beautiful and successful blend of widely different stylistic elements: traces of the then fashionable chinoiserie-like style in the 2 figures at the upper right corner, the traditional baroque atmosphere of drammatic lighting and its taste for shocking scenes and exagerations, and, most surprising of all, an amazing similitude of the shape of the face, body and cloth of the Christ with the models found in the byzantine tradition. How a most probably unlearned slave indian could gather all this elements for his creation remains a mystery.
