El Morrow National Monument, New Mexico

At the bottom of the monument there is a pool of water. This is something precious in the desert of New Mexico. It made this a very popular spot for people over the last Millenium. How do we know this was a popular place? Well dating back to the 1100s the people who stayed at El Marrow, etched things in the rock. You can also see some etchings from 12th Century, 1605 and 1859. The 1605 was the Spanish Governor of the Territory after seeing the Pacific Ocean, and felt the need to brag about that in the rock. In 1859 the Calvary stopped there testing out a way to get supplies from Texas to California (following the 1849 gold rush) across the vast deserts of Texas NewMexico, Arizona and California. The US Camel Corps was testing Camels as a mode of transportation when they stayed at El Morrow. Many names of the individuals in this expedition are etched into the sandstone at El Morrow. 40 camels came to America from Northern Africa, with their trainer. He was a Syrian man named Hadji Ali. The Americans of the time called him "Hi Jolly" in an effort to simplify his name. The US Camel Corp never made it to California. They stopped at Quartsite, Arizona. The Railroad was built and the West was tamed by an iron beast instead. The camels were placed in Zoos and sold to circuses and carnivals. Some Camels were let loose, and it is claimed that there are wild camels that roam in Arizona. However, I do not know anyone who has seen any wild camels personally.

Anyway, ( back to El Morrow). You gradually climb to the top of the Sandstone cliff. Once at the top besides this view in the photo you will find the ruins of a village that belonged to those earliest people who stayed at El Morrow .
