Here you find a bit more detail of Devil's Tower than the picture with the horses in the main Gallery.
Devil's Tower was the USA's first National Monument (1906) thanks to then President Theodore Roosevelt. It rises 1,267 feet into the sky and is the product of erosion. Well actually to many Native American tribes from the area it was the sacred product of a giant spirit that took the form of a bear and chased some of their ancestors to the top of the mesa only to leave giant claw marks in the side as it tried to climb to the top.
I never had imagined the deep texture and the yellowish color it has from seeing it as a child in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

I will probably delete the landscapes I put in the family album after a day if they don't spark any interest (comments). They are meant to help people envision the places I have posted in the main gallery. Hopefully, some of these images will add to the experience you may seek in the main gallery.

Oddly, I just watched "Close Encounter" for the first time since the mid-seventies in a theatre a few nights ago. Your picture caught my eye right away. On the critical side, the rock appears to be is basalt - very common in my area - and I know it as a grey rock. The rock in the photo seems green. Is this mistake with the colour, or is this their lichen or moss growing on Devil's Tower.

From a distance it appeared grey. As you get closer it is a vibrant with color (not grey) ochre color. It really is not what you expect it to be even when you are a few miles from it. On this day it rained, and we walked the loop around the base of the tower. The rangers were dispatched to get the rock climbers down. I will look for a picture I recall taking of my wife on the rocks at the base looking up at the tower real close up. This might answer your question.

I resisted going to see this. I thought I had seen it before. I thought it was like the mesas we have further south. All I can say about it: this is something you can't appreciate as what it is unless you are there. And you really don't get what it is unless you are within feet of it.
Once I was drug to the base of it, I was so glad I was there.

Geoff, I did darken the photo a bit. I see what you mean by lichen or moss. That may be the result of me making the photo darker. I can't remember if this was before or after the rain. I do know it eas a telephoto shot.
