notes:
Arcades are “monuments” to good taste and style, specially if they surround one of the most beautiful and harmonious squares in Lisbon, (Terreiro do Paco Square) and houses one of the most well known Cafes (Martinho da Arcada) the favourite one of the famous Portuguese writer, Fernando Pessoa!
And it’s about this beautiful square that I read something interesting and very intriguing: ”Terreiro do Paco Square”is part of “Baixa Pombalina” destroyed by the earthquake of 1755 and reconstructed under the order of Sebastiao Jose Carvalho e Melo, the Marquis of Pombal . It is said that this construction looks like a “Freemasonry Temple” and that the Equestrian Statue of the King D. Jose, which is presiding the square, is made of Bronze (Copper + Tin = Bronze) colours of the sun and the moon, true symbols of Freemasonry, and that this same statue is not placed right in the center of the square, in order to create a vertex of a Masonic triangle together with Ouro and Prata streets of Baixa Pombalina!!!
Was there any relationship between the Portuguese Minister and the ancient Freemasonry?
Well, this is another story…
