St Michael's Cathedral was built in the 1840's under the supervision of Bishop Innocent (Ivan Veniaminov) - later Saint Innocent. It is a vivid reminder of Russia's religious influence in early Sitka history.

The Cathedral was patterned after classical European architecture as evidenced by its dome and bell tower.

Bishop Innocent designed the cathedral's bell-tower clock .

The original Cathedral burned down on January 1, 1966, it was rebuilt through the efforts and sacrifices of the community and donations from around the US.
