Kinnicinik is the name for this low growing evergreen plant that produces red berries (sometimes called bear berries). I'm sure it grows elsewhere and called different names. At any rate, it grows in a variety of places in the the mountains. This sample was growing through some snow and ice high on a mountain top when I saw it. The way it had created a miniture greenhouse with a roof of ice intrigued me, and the lack of green chlorophyll in the leaves at this time of year created an interesting look.
