Standing guard over the ruins of Fort Bowie on the Apache pass of the Chiricahua mountains is this bell. The fort was built near a mountain spring and protected the mail stage, and the route to and from California. In the 35 years (1860s-1890s) Fort Bowie stood; many young men died in the Indian wars with the Chiricahuan Apache.
