This is a very ancient rose which probably originated in the Middle East as a hybrid of R. Gallica and R. Moschata. It is thought by some to be the rose mentioned by Herodotus in the 5th century BC, growing in the gardens of Midas and more sweetly scented than all other roses, and also mentioned by Virgil as flowering twice a year at Paestum
