The name of this construction: "Isaaki Dalmatski church-bell tower". Tsar Peter I was born in memorial day of this saint, so prince Gagarin choose this name for the church he built in 1703. Prince Gagarin was a first general-governor of Siberia, later executed for his outstanding bribery.
As result of it – this church was never been finished with decoration.
This is well known construction referenced in most guides on russian architecture. Nonetheless no one cares about it and only thick walls alow it to survive. As having been built in period of search of new style, this church have no analogues in russian architecture. Its uncommonness is accentuated by an older traditional church in the background. “Isaaki” looks very big in size, but inside it’s incredibly small. Central room is probably about 5X5m (!) - ‘cause there’s a gallery on the perimeter. Two spiral staircases lead to upper levels of church. It’s a fantastic feeling to stay inside this “well” filled with plenty of light coming through numerous arched apertures. I made few photos from inside, but unfortunately the wide angle of my camera is not enough to imprint this beauty.
First time I visited this place about 10 years ago. I made some photos yet not of perfect quality, then I still can’t find a scanner to scan good my huge collection of slides. Last Saturday I’ve decided to go there again. Sky was almost clear when I began my way from Moscow, but when after one hour of road the bus drove up to Nikitskoe village (in 30min of walk from Stepanovskoe), gray clouds blocked the sun. I thought I won’t get good pictures, but suddenly little blue gap on the horizon began to grow and cold autumn sun appeared soon. I made 170 photos and probably will post some of it later.

This is just wonderful work, and your history of this architecture makes it become more alive. How I would love to be able to walk inside...but will have to rely on your keen eye and art to show me.

Интересный объект, удачный ракурс, хороше использование короткого фокуса. Хотелось бы увидеть больше текстуры - представляю, какие там богатые в этом плане стены.
