Chillon Castle - a genuine 13 th century castle near Montreux, Switzerland. Famous poem by Lord Byron, The Prisoner Shilona was written about a real person François Bonivarde, officials from Geneva, who spoke in favor of the Reformation and was thrown into a dungeon of the castle and chained to a stone pillar Duke of Savoy.
The castle appears and rises above the water, took the rocky island and is connected to the mainland by a small wooden bridge. In the old days, such an arrangement had practical value. The castle stood on the road from Burgundy to Italy, and defended the military and commercial interests of the House of Savoy.
