I often use fill-in flash to compensate low light at small aperture (in order to preserve as much DOF as possible). Usually such flash (TTL) does not white out natural colors of the subject (of cause with appropriate exposure compensation). In this particular case, all details on the wings are preserved, as well as the grayish color appeared to be natural. Therefore, the flash does not “kill the color” if it is appropriately compensated.
