This is the view from the church of Rшros in Norway.
The town of Rшros is one of the oldest towns of wooden buildings
in Europe, and also one of the few mining towns in the
world that has been found worthy of a place on UNESCO’s
World Heritage List. The town centre boasts a rare collection
of large and well-preserved wooden buildings, made all the
more real and authentic by the fact that the people of today
live and work in them.
Legend has it that the origin of the mining operations and the
town of Rшros was actually a reindeer buck and the farmer
Hans Olsen Aasen. One day in 1644, when Hans Olsen Aasen
was out hunting, he took aim and shot as he had done many
times before. Before the reindeer fell, it kicked a stone into the
sunlight, where it sparkled. Two years later, in 1646, the first
smelting works had been completed beside the river Hyttelva,
and the history of “Bergstaden” – the mining town – could begin.
Rшros became both a mining and an agricultural town. It all
started with trial mining in an opening in Rauhеmmеren in the
year 1644 under the leadership of the manager of Kvikne Copperworks,
Lorentz Lossius. From 1646 the mining town grew at a
rapid pace. Experts came from Denmark and Germany with their
knowledge and experience of mining, and they proved to be
crucial to the development of Rшros and the region. Buildings
shot up around Malmplassen square, with two parallel main
streets and the rectangular street blocks that were typical of
town planning in the time of the “mining King” Christian the
Fourth. The inhabitants combined mining with farming.
Throughout its 333 years of history, Rшros Copperworks played
a predominant economic and social role in the region and in the
Danish/Norwegian kingdom, as well as gaining international significance.
The importance that Peder Hiort, the works director,
paid to the mining operations in his accounts of Rшros Copperworks
speaks for itself: “…Rшraas Copperworks, the largest and
most important of the northern mountain mines…”. The last
working mine, at Killingdal, closed down in 1986.
