The name for this wild orchid comes from Calypso, the daughter of the Greek God Atlas, who had a torrid 7 year affair with Odyseuss the traveller. This orchid is one of a few that grow in BC and is fairly rare. The small bloom appears for a week in May on top of a 10 cm stem which grows from a single green leaf on the forest floor. I've always looked forward to finding and photographing a few blooms in our woods each spring.
