If 'Light and shadow ' is the major visual idea of this image, a b/w version looks preferrable because b/w tones emphasise this idea. Color takes away the viewer's attention from it.
Also, if you select lighter background tone, your image will look cropped as you cropped it. Now it looks like to much extra space on the left and on the right.
