This is the 50th anniversary of the eruption of Capelinhos in 1957. The volcano actually erupted off the coast and added 2km of land that you see in the photo. The lighthouse is finally being restored. The new cupola was added this Spring. Capelinhos still stands against earthquakes, storms and sometimes hurricane force winds.
