The Imperial order of St. Andrew - the first time the institution Russian order, the highest award of the Russian Empire before 1917. In 1998, the order was restored as the highest award of the Russian Federation.
Order of St. Andrew consisted of:
1) Sign of the cross, the main image of which was St. Andrew, crucified, according to the legend, the cross X-shaped configuration; the four ends of the cross letters: S.A.P.R. that means lat. Sanctus Andreus Patronus Russiae - St. Andrew, the patron of Russia. Badge was worn on the wide blue silk ribbon over the right shoulder.
2) Silver eight-pointed stars placed in the Central medallion bore the motto of the order «For faith and loyalty». The star worn on the left breast above all other awards.
A disciple of Jesus Christ Andrew Church legend was involved in the spread of Christianity in the territory of the Russia and is considered to be the patron Saint of Russia. He was crucified on an oblique cross (St Andrew's cross) in Greece about the year 70, that has defined the design of marks and the flag of the Navy of Russia (St. Andrew's flag).
