The name has been interpreted in different ways, the people were of the opinion that it comes from the word «jõhvikas» (in Estonian "cranberry"), but there is no linguistic evidence of this. In the 1930s, local historian H. Kurba proposed to link it with the word «jõevesi» (translated as "river water") due to being in the center of the spring, which gave its name to one of Pühajõe tributaries. Finnish linguist L. Kettunen decided to base the word «jõhv» (translated as "horse hair"), which is by far the most recognized version. It is also possible that the origin of the names of Jõhvi related to the word «jõhvuss» ( «hair-worm"),
The first mention of the village mentioned in 1241 in the Danish land registry (Eng.) As the Gevi (later Jewe) [6]. It is said that the village consists of 20 plows (plow - land conditional measure is a unit of land-taxation), and is owned by the Danish king.
At the end of the XVI century Jõhvi passes under the control of Sweden, and later on the Treaty of Nystad became part of the Russian Empire until 1918. In Russia, the locality was officially called Ievve, was a Kreis Wierland province of Estonia and wore the status of the town.

Мне вот не хватило здесь человека в красной одежде, идущего вдоль домов. Примерно там, куда тени от ёлок падают. Тогда совсем бы все сложилось, п-моему...
