notes:
In Malta, it is customary to give names to their homes. Such name does not replace the number, but serves as an addition to it; when they give their address, they can add the name to make it easier to find the house.
The choice of names is not limited to anything; absolutely original names may occur, but there are certain traditions, too. The name can be a combination of first names of husband and wife, for instance, Jean - Phil from Jean and Philip, Joe - Mar from Joseph and Marie, Fran - Del from France and Delin. Catholicism is very strong in Malta, so house names based on religious beliefs are not uncommon, like, say, the House of St. Joseph, the House of St. Paul or the Immaculate Conception.
There may be such names as: Harmony, Mediterranean House, House of Calm, House of St. Joseph, Paradise, Paradise on Earth, Welcome, Shelter, Sea Villa, Villa Rose.
The guide of one of the excursions in which I participated — a tall slender woman — gave her home the name of Elegance.
The name of the house is usually accompanied by a ceramic or metal image and is illuminated by a lantern or a lamp, but not necessarily, there may be different combinations, and sometimes only an image.
