In accordance with the Law of 11/02/1879, the government determines the opening of the competition for the “construction of a metal bridge over the Douro River, in the place considered the most convenient in front of the city of Porto, for the replacement of the current suspended bridge”. The winning proposal was the project of engineer Teуfilo Seyrig, from the Belgian company Societй de Willebroeck.

Teуfilo Seyrig had already been the author of the plan and head of the team in the project of the Ponte D. Maria Pia (D. Maria Pia Bridge) as Eiffel’s associate. This time he was the sole responsible for this work of the new and grand Ponte D. Luнs I (D. Luнs I Bridge). The construction works began in 1881 and the inauguration occurred on 31 October 1886). The arch comprises 172m of cord and is 44.6m tall.

Por proposta de Lei de 11/02/1879 o governo determina a abertura de concurso para a “construзгo de uma ponte metбlica sobre o rio Douro, no local que se julgar mais conveniente em frente da cidade do Porto, para a substituiзгo da actual ponte pкnsil”. Foi vencedora a proposta da empresa belga Sociйtй de Willebroeck, com projecto do Engenheiro Teуfilo Seyrig.

Teуfilo Seyrig que, jб fora o autor da concepзгo e chefe da equipa de projecto da Ponte Maria Pia, enquanto sуcio de Eiffel, assina como ъnico responsбvel a nova e grandiosa Ponte Luнs I. A construзгo iniciou-se em 1881 e foi inaugurada em 31 de Outubro de 1886. O arco mede 172 m de corda e tem 44,6 m de flecha.
